Rome, Ga. - Shorter College Director of Athletics Bill Peterson announced Saturday the school's plan to begin a men's and women's lacrosse program with play scheduled to begin in the spring of 2011.
The addition of the two lacrosse programs will push the number of intercollegiate sports at Shorter to 20, and coincides nicely with the beginning of construction on the Ben Brady Multi-purpose turf field, located adjacent to the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
The state-of-the-art turf facility is the future home of Shorter's men's and women's soccer programs while also serving as a football practice facility and lacrosse game field.
"We are genuinely excited about adding lacrosse to our athletic programs here at Shorter," said Peterson. "Lacrosse is growing rapidly and it is becoming a real favorite among Georgia high schools.
"Additionally, we believe the addition of lacrosse is a testament to Shorter's stated goal of excellence in athletics."
The national search for a men's head coach and women's head coach will begin immediately. Details about the position can be found on NCAA.org and NAIA.org in the coming days, with the job postings available online for one month.
Shorter College will accept applications for the head coaching positions and graduate assistant positions until Friday, Oct. 2 with a decision scheduled to be made by Nov. 6.
Two search committees have been formed to take on the task of selecting qualified leaders. The men's lacrosse head coach committee consists of head football coach Phil Jones, Assistant Professor of Business Gina McDaniel, head women's basketball coach Vic Mitchell and head men's basketball coach Chad Warner.
The women's lacrosse coach search committee includes School of Education and Social Sciences Program Director Dr. Jill Borchert, head volleyball coach Jon Moseley, Shorter CFO and Vice President of Finance Stephanie Owens and head men and women's soccer coach Josh Severns.
Sports Information Director Matt Green will also serve on both committees.
