Rome, Ga. - In the first of a three-game series against the Berry College Vikings, the Shorter College Hawks fell 4-3.

The first run didn't appear on the board until the top of the eighth inning when Berry's Ryan Starr scored on a ground out from Patrick Taylor, to give the Vikings (10-3, 2-2) the lead 1-0.

In the bottom of the ninth, Shorter (7-8, 2-2) scored the tying run to send the game into extra innings on a Shannon Houston solo home run.

In the top of the eleventh, well-placed hits from the Vikings gave Berry three runs to take the 4-1 lead.

Shorter's Mark Charrette hit a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the eleventh to cut the lead by two, but it wouldn't be enough as the Hawks fell 4-3.

Dustin Bowers started the game for the Hawks, pitching 7.2 innings, giving up only three hits and one run. JP Griffin came in relief and picked up the loss for Shorter (2-1).

The Hawks continue play against Berry tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
