Rome, Ga. - The Shorter College Hawks baseball team took a heart-breaking loss in their first conference game of the season against the Southern Wesleyan University Warriors on Friday afternoon, falling to 6-8 overall, and 0-1 in the SSAC with the 10-9 loss.

Shorter took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Will Davis ground out that scored Jake Broome. Southern Wesleyan responded with three runs of their own in the top of the next inning, on three hits and three Shorter errors, to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

It wasn't long though before the Hawks were able to tie the game up. In the bottom of the second inning, RBI singles from Scott Morris and Pat Langley put the game at 3-3.

The runs kept on coming in the third inning. After a one-run third from the Warriors (4-13, 1-2), the Hawks responded with their biggest outing of the game. All the batters hat a chance at the plate, and four runs came across the plate for Shorter, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Langley. Shorter went into the fourth inning up 7-4.

After Southern Wesleyan battled back with one run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, Shorter scored their last runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Adam Pilate hit an RBI single, and a Broome walk scored two runs for the Hawks, as the game would remain 9-7 until the ninth inning.

In the final inning, an RBI single, an RBI double and an error cost the Hawks their first conference game, losing 10-9.

Shorter had 15 hits in the game, led by Langley who finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs, and Broome who was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

Matt Kirksey (0-3) was the losing pitcher for Shorter, pitching three innings giving up three hits and two earned runs. Tyler Brady got the win for Southern Wesleyan.

The Hawks play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a double-header against Southern Wesleyan at the Ledbetter Complex on Shorter's campus.
