Rome, Ga. - In the first game of a three-game set with the 9th-ranked Southern Polytechnic Runnin' Hornets, the Shorter College Hawks baseball team lost their fifth straight game 9-2. The conference loss puts Shorter at 9-14 overall and 1-6 in the SSAC, while Southern Poly improves to 21-3 overall, 5-2 in the SSAC.

After Southern Poly put the first two runs on the board in the second and third innings, the Hawks cut the Runnin' Hornets' lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Gustavo Bonilla and Will Davis hit back-to-back singles and Bonilla was brought home on the next play - an RBI single to left field from Cody Barnes to make it a 2-1 game.

In the fifth inning, the game went south for Shorter. Southern Poly saw 11 hitters reach the batter's box, scoring six runs on five hits to take the 8-1 lead.

After Southern Poly scored one more run in the seventh inning, the Hawks added one of their own in the bottom of the eighth. A Davis sacrifice fly to center scored Shannon Houston for the last run of the game as the Hawks lost 9-2.

Houston finished the day 2-for-5 with a run, and both Davis and Barnes were 1-for-3 with an RBI.

David Harden got the win for Southern Polytechnic, pitching eight innings, giving up eight hits and two earned runs. Dustin Bowers (2-2) was the loser for Shorter, pitching six innings for five earned runs, striking out four.

The Hawks will continue play tomorrow at the Ledbetter Complex with games two and three of the series with Southern Poly, beginning at 1 p.m.
