April 10, 2008

Carrollton, Ga. - The Shorter College Hawks baseball team came away with a big win on the road Wednesday afternoon, by taking a 5-4 decision against NCAA Div. II West Georgia at Cole Field, in 11 innings.

Single runs in the first, second and fourth innings staked West Georgia to a 3-1 lead. The Hawks rallied to tie with single runs in the sixth and seventh, only to see the Wolves reclaim the lead with a tally in the bottom of the seventh. Shorter pushed across a game-tying run in the top of the ninth, and then scored the game winner in the top of the 11th.

Jarrod Lewis entered the game in the ninth inning as the Hawks' DH, and had two hits, both of which drove in runs, which were crucial in Shorter's win.

Brandon Ponder was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, Ryan Murphy was 3-for-5 and Trevor Miller was 2-for-6 with an RBI.

Trey Carnes (2-2) earned the win for the Hawks (14-27). He pitched three innings, allowed two hits and struck out three.

"We played like we're supposed to," Shorter coach Matt Larry said. "Hopefully, we'll carry it over to the weekend."

Shorter hosts Southern States Athletic Conference foe Auburn-Montgomery on Friday at 3 p.m.
