Rome, Ga. - The Shorter College Hawks baseball took a close defeat to the nationally-ranked Auburn-Montgomery Senators on Friday afternoon, 5-3, at the Robert H. Ledbetter Complex.

The No. 15-ranked Senators (33-15, 17-5) jumped off to an early lead on a two-run home run in the first inning, and added one run a piece in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

Shorter (14-28, 5-17) jumped to attention in the seventh inning on four consecutive singles from Jake Broome, Matt Turner, Dustan Cantrell and Brandon Ponder. Both Cantrell and Ponder picked up an RBI to put the Hawks within three runs at 5-2.

In the eighth inning, the Hawks put one more on the board as Mark Charrette doubled and reached home on an AUM error, to make the final 5-3.

Ponder, Charrette and Cantrell each had two hits on the day.

Dustin Bowers pitched the complete game for the Hawks, giving up eight hits, three earned runs and striking out four.

Shorter will play a doubleheader against the Senators tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. The Rome and Floyd County Parks and Recreation Department's Tee-Ball League will be recognized before the start of the first game.
