Norcross, Ga. - Shorter College junior pitcher Tim Day has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league offices on Monday afternoon.

Day, a 5-10 right-hander who hails from Panorama, FC Australia, recorded a save and a win last week to help Shorter post victories against a pair of highly ranked opponents.

Day, who is 4-2 on the season with a team-best 3.91 earned run average, collected his first save of the season in the Hawks' 12-10 triumph over No. 11-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan College on March 23. In that outing, Day retired Tennessee Wesleyan in order in the seventh with two of his three outs coming by way of strikeout.

Day's best performance, however, came on Saturday afternoon in Marietta.

There, Day tossed a masterful complete game against one of the nation's most potent lineups as Shorter handed No. 4-ranked Southern Polytechnic State University its first SSAC loss and third overall loss of the season.

Day allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out a pair in 7.0 innings of work. He saved his best for last, working out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure Shorter's 8-3 victory over the now 33-3 Hornets.

This is the first Player of the Week honor for Day, who has emerged as the top arm in Shorter's pitching rotation with his steady play throughout the first half of the season.

His 35 total K's this season are tops on the Shorter pitching staff. Day is averaging 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings and ranks 33rd in NAIA Division I in total innings pitched (48.1).

Day and the Hawks (14-20) are in action this afternoon against Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Tenn. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
