Rome, Ga. - In the Southern States Athletic Conference's weekly baseball awards, Shorter College's Daniel Gandia has been named the Pitcher of the Week following his performance in last Saturday's 3-0 victory over Lee University.

Gandia, a 6'5" senior from Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, pitched seven innings against nationally-ranked No. 2 Lee, giving up only three hits and zero runs in the shutout victory.

"I was excited after the win and was hopeful that it would motivate us for the second game," said Gandia. "We still have the rest of the season to work on, though, and I am confident that if this team can beat Lee, we can compete with anyone."

The win allowed the Hawks to break Lee's 34-game win streak and gave the Flames their first conference loss of the season. Shorter went on to take the second game for the series victory.

"This is a well-deserved honor for Gandia and for our team," said head coach Matt Larry. "This was one of the best games of his career and I'm extremely proud of what he accomplished.

Shorter continues play on Wednesday as they travel to Calhoun Community College in Decatur, Ala., for a doubleheader against Lambuth University.
