Jan. 30, 2009 Montgomery, Ala. - The Shorter College Hawks basketball team were able to avenge an earlier loss in the season Thursday night, as they beat the Eagles of Faulkner University on the road, 56-51. The win is the Hawks' 6th for January, and also their fifth straight game away from the Winthrop-King Centre. Tomas Pranciliauskas was the only Hawk in double-digits with 12 points, followed by Qavotstaraj Waddell who had nine points. Waddell additionally led the team with nine rebounds - one offensive and eight defensive. Faulkner had the 34-30 lead at half time, but Shorter (11-10, 7-3 SSAC) outscored the Eagles 26-17 in the final 20 minutes to pull out the win. Both teams struggled to find the basket all night, with Shorter shooting 37.9% on field goals and a dismal 23.1% from beyond the arc (including 0-for-7 in the second quarter. Faulkner (12-9, 4-6 SSAC) didn't fare much better, however, shooting 19-of-54 from the field and 5-for-15 beyond the arc. The win allows Shorter to remain securely in third place in the Southern States Athletic Conference heading into Saturday's match-up with the first place and 13th-ranked Auburn-Montgomery Senators at 4 p.m. The Senators' only conference loss was to Shorter back in November. |
