Marqise Wright earns second SSAC Player of the Week honor

Atlanta, Ga. - Shorter College junior forward Marqise Wright has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week as announced by the league offices on Tuesday morning.

This is the second Player of the Week honor for Wright this season, who leads the Hawks in scoring and rebounding at 15.1 points and 12.1 caroms per game.

He ranks first in the entire country in total rebounds (255) and defensive rebounds per game (9.9) while his rebounding average ranks third in the nation.

Wright was brilliant yet again for Shorter last week, averaging 23.5 points, 15.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists as Shorter went 1-1 during the week of Jan. 25-31.

The Gainesville, Ga., native scored a career-high 25 points to go along with 16 rebounds in Shorter's narrow, 79-71 loss to No. 23 Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., on Thursday, Jan. 28. He had torched the Flames back on Nov. 19 for 24 points and a career-best 22 rebounds in the Hawks' triple overtime victory.

Earlier in the week, Wright hit four threes on his way to 22 points, 14 boards and six assists in Shorter's 88-60 blowout of cross-town rival Berry College.

At 6-foot-6, Wright made six threes in the week and also made 9-of-10 from the foul line.

Wright has produced five straight double-doubles and has posted 15 double-doubles in 21 games. He has scored in double figures in nine straight contests and 16 of his last 17 outings.

Wright and the Hawks (14-7, 3-5 SSAC) return to SSAC action when they welcome Auburn University-Montgomery (10-8, 5-3 SSAC) to the Winthrop-King Centre on Thursday, Feb. 4. The Shorter Lady Hawks will tip of the league double dip with a 6 p.m. tip with the men to follow at approximately 8 p.m.
