Rome, Ga. - After a 19-win season and a postseason victory over Berry College to advance to the SSAC semifinals, the Southern States Athletic Conference has named Shorter College as host and the Winthrop-King Centre as the site for the 2009 SSAC Men's Basketball Tournament. The announcement was made today by SSAC commissioner Kurt Patberg.

"We are so excited about hosting the tournament," said head coach Chad Warner. "We're extremely proud of our facilities and the support we continue to receive from the city of Rome. It is our goal to put on a first-class tournament for Shorter, the SSAC, and our community."

Shorter's Winthrop-King Centre has served as the home court for the Hawks and Lady Hawks men's and women's basketball programs for the past 15 seasons. The 1,500-seat facility has previously hosted the Rome-News Tribune Holiday Tournament, as well as numerous Tae Kwon Do and fencing tournaments.

The eight-team tournament will be held March 4-7. It has been held at Lee University for the past two seasons.

"It is an honor that the 2008 SSAC tournament will be played at Shorter," said Bill Peterson, Director of Athletics. "The college continues to receive increased exposure in the NAIA and the SSAC, and the community has been behind us every step of the way."

Shorter ended their 2008 season last March with a 19-12 record, earning a spot in the NAIA Top 25 midway through the season. Warner, in his second season with Shorter, will take the court for their first game on Oct. 30 at the Berry College Classic against Union College (Tenn.).
