Cumberlands, Tenn. - To secure their second winning season in a row (in only a three-year history), the Shorter College football team (6-4, 2-3) downed the Cumberland University Bulldogs (2-7, 1-3), 34-7, on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks got things started with 6:18 left in the first quarter on an A.J. Cooley one-yard run, with a point-after from Lukas Gonzalez, to take an early lead 7-0. Their only other points in the half came a little more than five minutes later on a Raymone Nesbitt three-yard carry to give the Hawks seven more points.

Their lead was cut in half before the half, however, as Cumberland's Matt Eads threw a 67-yard pass to Josh Crouch to make the game 14-7 at half.

In the second half of the game, the Hawks made up for their previous mistakes. They scored 20 unanswered points, starting with a Chris Chapman 17-yard carry in the third quarter. Eight minutes later, Shorter's Nick Bearden recovered a fumbled punt from the Bulldogs' Josh Crouch, to put the Hawks up 26-7.

Six more points came at the end of the fourth on an Armond Smith 66-yard carry, to make the final 34-7.

The Hawks ran for 336 rushing yards in the game, with Smith leading the way with 71 yards. Quarterback Drew Elrod followed close behind with 63 yards.

On defense, Will Oliver, Kenneth James and Octavious Taylor combined for three interceptions on the day. James and Ryan Gloer led the team in tackles with eight a piece.

The Hawks hope to finish out their season strong as they return home next Saturday to face Lambuth University. Kick-off is at 1:30 p.m. at Barron Stadium in Rome, Ga. In addition to Military Appreciation Day, the Hawks will celebrate Senior Day.
