Rome, Ga. - In their final game of the season, the Shorter College Hawks football team beat the Lambuth University Eagles on Saturday afternoon, 42-18, at Barron Stadium to end the season with a 7-4 (3-3 Mid-South conference) record.
Shorter got off to an early lead in the first quarter. After three plays, Drew Elrod made a 36-yard carry into the end zone, followed by a Lukas Gonzalez extra point, to put Shorter up 7-0, with 13:19 left. Later in the first, Elrod made his second touchdown of the game on a four-yard carry, to complete an 80-yard drive.
Lambuth finally got on the board to end the first half on a Ryan Nanney 24-yard field goal, to make the game 14-3.
The Hawks continued to strengthen their lead in the third quarter. With 8:16 left, Chris Chapman made a seven-yard carry for a touchdown, and was followed by an Elrod 24-yard touchdown pass to Nick Dodson a little over five minutes later, to give Shorter the 28-3 lead.
The fourth quarter saw five different scoring plays. To start things off, Shorter took their biggest lead in the game 15 seconds into the quarter on a five-yard Elrod touchdown carry to put Shorter up 35-3. With 4:40 left in the game, Lambuth's Vincent Mazzurco blocked a Gonzalez punt which bounced into the end zone for a Shorter safety.
Lambuth tacked on six more points on the board with 1:50 left on a Josh Garza 11-yard pass to Brandon Okechukwu to put the margin at 35-11. Just 11 seconds later, after a recovered onside kick, the Eagles scored seven more on a Garza 57-yard pass to Dustin Hargrove.
Shorter finished things out with 1:26 left in the game as Blake Terrell ran 29 yards into the end zone, to give the Hawks the win, 42-18.
Gonzalez had an exceptional game for the Hawks, as he broke the Shorter College record for longest punt at 68 yards (Gonzalez previously held the record at 62 yards). He was also 5-for-5 on extra points in today's game.
A.J. Baker also broke a Shorter record in today's game as he had his fifth interception of the season, to hold the record for most interceptions in a season. The team had four interceptions.
Shorter finished the game with 320 rushing yards to Lambuth's 108 yards . Armond Smith led the Hawks with 77 yards on five attempts.
