Silvis, Ill. - Shorter College's Arvid Bengtsson fired a two-over 73 to stand in a tie for 23rd-place after the first round of the 2010 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Bengtsson, one of two at-large entries into the 156-man national tournament field, admirably navigated the championship course on day one and sits six strokes back of leader Axel Ochoa of Oklahoma Christian University with three rounds to play.

The junior out of Enhoping, Sweden, who held a lead after the first round of the NAIA Preview Invitational against a loaded field on the same par-71, 6,983-yard course back in October, posted one birdie and three bogeys to remain within striking distance.

Only eight players managed to shoot under par in the first round.

Bengtsson, who captured the tournament's long drive competition on Monday with a mammoth 313-yard drive, certainly hung with the big boys in Tuesday's opening round.

A two-time tournament medalist - Bengtsson won the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational in Rome in October and the Thomas University Winter Invitational in February - that posted seven top-five finishes in Shorter's nine events this season, Bengtsson shrugged off a sluggish start and found his consistency late in the round to put himself in great position.

Bengtsson, who began his round on the 10th tee, recorded bogeys on 12, 14 and 1 before tallying his first birdie of the championship on the par-5 second and closing out round one with seven consecutive pars.

Bengtsson will tee off from No. 1 in tomorrow's second round at 12:30 p.m. CDT.
