Silvis, Ill. - Shorter College junior Arvid Bengtsson shot an even-par 71 on Thursday afternoon to end the third round in a tie for fourth-place overall at the 2010 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships held at the TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Bengtsson, who began the day in 22nd after posting a 75 on Wednesday, bounced back with his best 18 holes of the tournament thus far to remain within 10 strokes of tournament leader Justin Lower of Malone University.

Lower also turned in an even-par third round - he and Bengtsson were the only golfers among the top 11 of the leaderboard to not go over par in the third round - to remain at four-under with just one more day of competition. He holds a six stroke lead over Brett Quitiquit (+2) of Madonna University, who struggled on Thursday and finished the day with a five-over 76.

While it would take a truly miraculous performance in Friday's final round for Bengtsson to win an individual national championship, the Enhoping, Sweden native has certainly made his mark as one of the nation's premier golfers with his showing over the first three days of the national tournament.

Bengtsson has improved his position each day after opening the championship on Tuesday with a 73 that put him in 23rd after the first 18 holes.

Bengtsson is currently at +6, a score that may have him out of medalist contention, but one that has him in serious contention for a runner-up finish. He looms just four shots back of the second-place Quitiquit who, after an opening round of 68, has been out of sorts since, shooting a combined five-over par over his last 36 holes.

Early on, Bengtsson showed a flash of the brilliance that has resulted two tournament victories and seven top-five finishes in 2009-10 as he eagled the 546-yard, par five second to immediately drop to +4. Bengtsson birdied the second back on Tuesday and is three-under on that hole for the week.

Bengtsson will partake in the fourth and final round of the 2010 Men's Championships tomorrow.
