Rome native Rick O'Neal will play for Shorter next season

May 10, 2010

Rome, Ga. - Shorter College head men's lacrosse coach Nathan Young announced today the signing of former Darlington School standout Rick O'Neal to his first recruiting class.

O'Neal, who was a four-year varsity letter winner in lacrosse and a three-year varsity letterman in football while at Darlington, joins the Hawks' program after attending Georgia Southern University last year.

"It is always a great day when we can welcome local student-athletes into our program," Young said. "Darlington has an excellent lacrosse tradition and to have the opportunity to sign an outstanding young man such as Rick who excelled as a Tiger is something that we value."

O'Neal, a native of Rome, figures to play in the Hawks' midfield. While the 5-10, 170-pounder will bring athletic talent to the Hill, his accomplishments in the classroom bring another dimension to the table.

While at Georgia Southern during the 2009-10 academic year, O'Neal was named to the Dean's List in both semesters while being inducted into the school's Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.

O'Neal was also nominated to the Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Organization, an honor bestowed upon those students who stand in the top 15 percent of the freshman class.

"Rick will be a great leader on and off the field for us," said Young. "He will bring upperclassman leadership to what at first will be a young program. We are also excited for Rick to have the chance to play collegiate lacrosse in his hometown and in front of his family and friends."

Shorter, which will become Shorter University on June 1, will compete in its first season of men's lacrosse next spring.
