Josh Severns enters his fifth season as head coach of the Shorter men's soccer program. In 2008, Severns guided the Hawks to a 7-1-1 record in the Southern States Athletic Conference, earning the program's first regular season conference championship. Severns garnered SSAC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year honors for his efforts, and was later honored as the SSAC Men's Sports Coach of the Year for the 2008-2009 athletic year. Both were his first such awards.

A graduate of Birmingham Southern College, Severns was part of three TranSouth Conference championship sides and helped the program to two regular season conference crowns. He participated in the NAIA National Tournament twice, winning the regional championship and appearing in the NAIA Final Four in 1999.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 2001, Severns served two years as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater. While in Birmingham, Severns also coached club soccer with Mountain Brook Soccer Club, now known as the Birmingham United Soccer Association.

Severns went on the receive his Master's degree in liberal studies from Jacksonville State University.

Severns holds a nationally certified United States Soccer Federation (USSF) "B" coaching license, a USSF Level 1 goalkeeping diploma and has been a longtime member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
