Ryan Timberlake scored Shorter's only goal in the final minute of regulation

Oct. 22, 2008

Central, S.C. - Although it didn't happen the way they wanted, the result is the same: the Shorter College Hawks soccer team is the Southern States Athletic Conference regular season champion for the first time in their short history. The Hawks took the Southern Wesleyan University Warriors to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday night, to finish their conference schedule with only one loss.

After Southern Wesleyan (6-6-1, 2-2-1) looked as if they would win the game, Ryan Timberlake scored 17th-ranked Shorter's (8-4-2, 7-1-1) only goal in the final minute of regulation to send the game into overtime. Neither team could find the net in the following two overtimes, which ended the game in a 1-1 tie.

Shorter has had their best year ever, with wins over cross-town rival Berry and nationally-ranked Auburn Montgomery. Their only conference loss of the season came against Reinhardt.

After the Hawks finish out their regular season with three away games against Thomas University (Oct. 24), University of Montevallo (Oct. 27), and Northwood University (Fla.) (Nov. 1), they will host the first game of the SSAC conference tournament as the higher seed on Nov. 8 at Darlington School against the No. 8 seed.
