Atlanta, Ga. - Shorter College sophomore goalkeeper Johnny Paletar has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league offices on Monday afternoon.

The Bel Air, Md., native allowed just one goal in two matches last week as Shorter went 1-0-1 with a 3-1 win over NCAA Division II University of Montevallo on Oct. 29 and a 0-0 draw with cross-town rival Berry College on Oct. 31.

The award is the first for Paletar, who has played in 15 matches this season after splitting time in goal during his freshman campaign in 2008.

Paletar made four crucial saves in the Hawks' come-from-behind victory over the Falcons last Thursday.

His clean sheet in 110 minutes of action against the Vikings was his fourth shut out of the season. Paletar made two vital stops on a soggy pitch versus Berry.

On the year, Paletar is 7-2-2 with a .860 goals against average and 42 saves.

The Hawks (10-5-2) travel to Cleveland, Tenn. on Tuesday, Nov. 3 as they close out the 2009 regular season with an SSAC date against Lee University at 5 p.m.

Shorter will host a first round game in the SSAC Tournament on Friday, Nov. 6 with the opponent and time still to be determined.
