Mt. Berry, Ga. - In the Hawks' showdown with rival Berry College on Thursday afternoon on the Vikings' home courts, Quentin Grieu rallied to down Marcelo Lebrao in three sets to give No. 19 Shorter a 5-4 Southern States Athletic Conference win over No. 13 Berry. Grieu opened the No. 3 singles match taking a 6-1 win in the first set, but saw Lebrao earn a 6-4 decision in the second set. In the third and deciding set, however, Grieu emerged claiming a 7-6 victory in a tiebreaker that ended the three-hour battle. Berry opened the match with a 2-1 lead coming out of doubles thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 2 by Christian Jackle and Andre Ferreira, and Lebrao and Adam Clifton, respectively. Shorter picked up a point at No. 3 doubles from Henrique Tomaz and Grieu. In singles, Berry earned two more points when Daniel Mician won at No. 4 and Clifton took a straight-set victory at No. 6. The Hawks, however, tied the match up when Cirimbelli rallied from a first set loss to won his No. 1 singles showdown. Tomaz won at No. 2 and Josh Lewis win in straight sets at No. 5 to set up Grieu's must-win clash. Shorter (8-2) hosts Kalamazoo College on Thursday at 2 p.m. |
