Mt. Berry, Ga. - In their first meet of the season, the Shorter College men's cross country team came on top, taking first place in the Berry Invitational. The team scored 35 points, ahead of Lee University's 54 points, and Berry College's 64 points.

On the humid Saturday morning, Martin Hernandez led all Hawk runners, finishing fourth overall on the 8K run with a 26:29.39. Newcomer Peter Limo placed eighth overall (and second for Shorter) finishing in 26:49.29, ahead of fellow Kenyan Cyrus Wakaba, who finished 12th overall with a 27:32.79.

Rounding out things for Shorter's top five were Josh Carson, who was 14th overall with a 27:57.53, and Brenton Widener, who was 24th overall with a 29:21.40.

"This was a good start to the year," said head coach Jay Stephenson. "We had some strong performances and it was nice to come out and capture first. All of our guys will be running at our next meet and I am looking forward to seeing this team's future results."

Also running strong for Shorter today were Therron Smith (25th - 29:23.03), Josh Giannoni (37th - 30:25.99), and Allen O'Neal (39th - 31:04.27).

All Shorter runners wore pink ribbons on Saturday in remembrance of red-shirt junior Jerad Godsave's mother who passed away from a long battle with breast cancer last week.

Shorter travels next to Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 4 for the Louisville Classic.
