Hernandez leads cross country to 24th place at Nationals

Kenosha, Wis. - In their first trip to Nationals in the short two year history of the program, the Shorter College Hawks cross country team finished in 24th place, with 583 points. Malone College from Ohio took first with 59 points. The race was held in Kenosha at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Martin Hernandez was the top finisher for the Hawks in 84th place (26:08.3) on the 8k course. He was followed by Jerad Godsave in 127th (26:29.6), Steven Rich in 179th (26:54.5), Andrew Rodriguez in 193rd (27:03.6), Cyrus Wakaba in 220th (27:26.5), Josh Carson in 231st (27:41.7), and Dustin Mitchell in 253rd (29:27.7).

Magrina Chepkoech, the lone Lady Hawk in Nationals, finished in an exceptional 46th place in the 5k course. Her time was 18:40.1.

"These guys really worked hard to get here and I'm proud of what they accomplished today," said head coach Jay Stephenson. "This is a great learning experience for them and a great place to run."

The Hawks qualified for the national competition following their Region XIII Championship at Berry College two weeks ago. Chepkoech qualified by placing second in the Region competition.
