Atlanta, Ga. - Shorter College sophomore guard Kelly Ellison has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week according to a release by the league offices on Tuesday afternoon.
This marks the first time that Ellison has garnered the award, and she did so after piecing together her best week of the season.
Ellison, who transferred to Shorter after playing her freshman season at NCAA Division I Stetson University, averaged 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.5 steals in leading Shorter to wins over Southern Wesleyan University on Jan. 21 and Columbia College (S.C.) on Jan. 23.
Ellison scored a career high 23 points in the 68-63 win over Southern Wesleyan last Thursday while also adding nine assists, five rebounds and three steals. She shot 8 of 12 from the floor, 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and played a team-high 36 minutes.
She followed up her career effort against the Lady Warriors with another solid performance against Columbia on Saturday. In limited action, Ellison posted nine points, six assists, four rebounds and no turnovers as Shorter cruised to a 76-52 victory.
Ellison hit at least one three-pointer in both games during the week, extending her streak of consecutive games with a trey to 11 games.
For the season, Ellison leads the Lady Hawks in scoring (10.3), assists (4.4) and steals (1.8). She had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists in Shorter's 74-69 loss to Berry College last night.
Ellison and the Lady Hawks return to SSAC action on Thursday, Jan. 28 when they travel to Cleveland, Tenn., to take on No. 6 Lee University. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Freshman Nikola Lambic is leading the SSAC in field goal percentage. He recorded his third double-double of the season against Berry on Saturday night leading the Warriors to a 2-1 week. On the week Lambic averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds and shot 68% from the field.
