Co-ed Competitive Cheerleading

Dear Prospective Shorter Cheerleader,

I trust you are as excited as I am about the addition of our new co-ed competitive cheer program, complete with full & partial scholarship opportunities!  I am seeking male and female athletes who possess a strong competitive cheerleading background to fill my 20 member team (no more than 11 guys and 9 girls).  As we make the transition from a non-competitive program to a fully co-ed competitive program, you can expect to see many changes in the program expectations.  Please do not let these expectations discourage you from trying out.  In addition to our ÒblueÓ and ÒwhiteÓ cheer squads, I am also hoping to develop a third ÒPepÓ squad of no more than 10 females who will cheer at home games for baseball, volleyball, and other Shorter sports.  There are no physical requirements for this team, other than a loud mouth and an infectious smile!  So, get involved and be a leader at Shorter College!

Tryout Information:

Shorter College tryouts for all squads will be held Monday, April 28, 2008 from 6-9pm, and Saturday, May 24, 2008, from 10am-1pm in the Shorter Gym.  Attendance at both sessions is recommended but not required.  If you have a conflict please let me know.  All athletes must pre-register for tryouts by contacting me via email or cell.  Bring all required paperwork with you to try outs, along with at least two letters of recommendation, and two pictures of yourself; one full length, and one head shot (doesnÕt have to be professional).  Video entries will be accepted until June 15, 2008.

Anyone who is a full time student at Shorter College, or has applied, may attend tryouts. This includes incoming freshmen and transfer students. If you have not yet applied, please apply on line at www.shorter.edu.

How to Prepare:
First, apply to Shorter and get accepted.  Make sure you are in good physical condition for stunts and tumbling.  Our athletes will be required to work out and lift weights up to 3 times per week, in addition to regular practices.  A large portion of tryouts will be spent working on stunting and tumbling.

Each cheerleader will be evaluated on the following:

       Standing and Running Tumbling

         Stunts, co-ed and all-girl

Motions (a cheer will be taught)

Dance (a fight song dance will be taught)

         Toe Touch Jump (females only)

         Interview

What to Wear: Our school colors are blue and white. These are the colors I recommend that you wear to the tryout.  No jewelry of any kind is allowed.

Women - practice shorts and a T-shirt, tank or sports bra. (nothing too loose or baggy)

Men - comfortable practice shorts and a T-shirt (no tank tops for the men)

Fall Tryouts 2008:
Fall Tryouts will be held only if roster positions become available over the summer. For updates on any available positions, please contact me no later than August 1, 2008.

Please feel free to give me a call at (706) 409-7469, or e-mail rmagness@shorter.edu.  DonÕt forget to PRE-REGISTER FOR TRY OUTS!
