Rome, Ga. - Led by individual winner DAniela Vargas, Shorter shot 311 on the final day to win by two strokes over Berry at the Stonebridge Invitational. Both Shorter and Berry share Stonebridge as a home course and both entered the final round tied at 309 when the day began. Vargas followed her opening round 68 with a 73 to finish with a winning score of 141. She was followed by runner-up Amy Goble, who fired a 76 on the second day and finished with a score of 149. Tyler Thompson (78-72) from Southern Nazarene and Maegan Rice (78-72) from Mobile, finished tied for third with matching scores of 150. Suzanne Irvin (81-72) from Seminole Community College was the final All-Tournament player with a score of 153. It was a battle down the stretch, as Vargas was aided by teammates Johanna Babra and Christy Pak, who tied for sixth place overall. Both players shot 76 for the final-round to finish with a 155-stroke total. Ashley Trenz had her second-day score of 88 dropped, but still finished with a 171, which was fourth-best on the Shorter team, while Ahmereen Humayun saved the Hawks with a final-round of 86, which gave her a 174 for the tournament. Shorter finished just two strokes ahead of Berry, which was led by Goble's second-place effort. Jayne Curtis shot matching rounds of 78 to finish tied for 11th with a 156. Elizabeth Gemmill shot a final-round of 84 to finish with a score of 160 and tie for 17th place. Callie Bennett had a strong second day with a score of 75 and finished one stroke behind Gemmill with a 161 total. Caysie Holley was the fifth for the Vikings after shooting a final-round 90 for a 172-stroke total. Southern Nazarene, led by Thompson, finished third with a 635 total. That was one-stroke ahead of Seminole CC, which shot 636. Savannah College of Art & Design rounded out the top-five with a score of 643. The tournament was hosted by Berry at Stonebridge Golf Club. 18 teams played in the event with 105 individuals competing. |
