Rome, Ga. - Hosting Southern States Athletic Conference opponent Brewton-Parker at Grizzard Park Saturday, the Hawks and Lady Hawks swept the Mt. Vernon squads.
Shorter's men defeated the Barons 6-2 while the women's team edged out a 1-0 victory after scoring early in the game and holding on for the win.
"We've really got to be focused in our conference games," Severns said. "The girls are coming around and our guys are playing well right now."
The Lady Hawks (4-4, 3-2) got on the board in the sixth minute when Tamar Watson scored off an assist by Pauline Van Der Henst.
"We dominated possession from then on, we just couldn't get any more goals," Severns said.
Shorter keepers Corrie McIravey-Davidson and Jessica Hoskinson combined to record the team's third shutout of the season.
The victory also marked the Lady Hawks' third win in a row, all of which have come against SSAC opponents.
For Shorter's men, Anthony O'Garro scored four goals and Angel Damian added two in the Hawks' overpowering win.
Damian made two rapid-fire goals to get the scoring started as he completed assists from Kyle Timberlake and Brian Arnold in the seventh and eighth minute, respectively.
O'Garro then tacked on his goals to make it 6-0 with the Barons finally scoring in the final five minutes to avoid the shutout.
He was aided by assists from Damian, Sam Norman, Robert Whitnell and Arnold.
Shorter's teams travel to Lebenon, Tenn., on Tuesday to face the top-10 ranked teams of Lee University.
"We're a completely different team than we were at the start of the year," Severns said, "and I'm really pleased with them so far."
