May 8, 2008

Orange Beach, Ala. - After a tough loss yesterday, the Shorter College Lady Hawks softball team bounced back and beat William Carey for s second time in the Region XIII Tournament, 7-3, to advance to the Championship game today against the University of Mobile. Shorter will have to beat the Lady Rams twice to capture the title.

Shorter got started against William Carey in the third inning. Amanda Albertson singled and stole second base, which cleared the way for a Kali Milford single to make the game 1-0. Following a Kandi Bruno 4-3 ground out, a Libby Munson single scored Milford to put Shorter up by two. William Carey bounced back in their next outing with three runs, two of which were unearned.

In the next three Lady Hawks innings, Shorter dominated the scoreboard. In the bottom of the fourth, a William Carey error on a Lindsey McDaniel batted ball allowed Lakyn Newton and Becca Thomas to score, giving Shorter the lead, which they held onto for the rest of the game.

In the fifth inning, Bruno scored after reaching base on a triple and then home on an error, to make the game 5-3. Two more runs came across in the bottom of the sixth, as Becca Thomas singled and was brought home on a McDaniel two-run home run, to end the game, Lady Hawks winning 7-3.

Thomas led the Lady Hawks with three hits, and Milford, Munson, Newton and Albertson each had two hits a piece.

Munson was the winning pitcher for Shorter, throwing the complete game with six hits, one earned run, two walks and eight strikeouts.

Shorter will now play the University of Mobile at 2 p.m., in the Region XIII Championship game. If Shorter wins, another game will be played approximately 30 minutes following the end of the first game.
