Rome, Ga. - In the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' National weekly softball awards, Lakyn Newton has been awarded the National Player of the Week honors for April 21-27. She was selected after winning the Southern States Athletic Conference award on Monday, and the Region XIII award on Tuesday.

Newton, a senior infielder from Greenville, Ala., recorded eight hits in nine at bats for a .889 batting average during the week and helped the team post a 4-0 record in the SSAC tournament. She scored three runs while driving in three more. On the season, Newton is batting .395 with 44 runs and 38 RBI.

"I knew that the pressure was on last week in the tournament because my numbers have been down lately," said Newton. "I took each at-bat like it was my last and, luckily, I pulled through for my team."

The Lady Hawks also moved up two spots in the NAIA National poll this week, jumping up to the No. 7 spot, after posting their 19th straight victory and capturing the SSAC tournament title.

"It was a big relief winning the tournament. As a team, we played like we knew we could," she added. "We are at the top of our game now: our pitching is on, our defense is on, and we are positive about the rest of our season."

Shorter hopes to keep their streak going as they travel next week to the Region XIII Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala., on May 6-8.
