Nov. 10, 2007

Mt. Vernon, Ga. - In the final round of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament, the Lady Hawks beat the Lee University Flames, 3-2, to capture their first-ever championship title, and to receive an automatic bid to the region tournament.

The Lady Hawks won the first match 32-30, then got a scare in the next two as Lee won 22-30, and 24-30. Shorter rebounded to take the last two, 32-30 and 15-12.

Kate Puckett and Kasi Runion led the team with 14 kills apiece. Kayla Rollins had 26 digs for Shorter and Kristy Walker has 50 assists.

To advance to the championship round, Shorter beat the Berry College Vikings this morning, 3-1.

In addition to their first-ever championship, Puckett and Runion were named First Team All-Conference, and Walker and Jenny Mealer received Second Team All-Conference honors. Runion and Walker were also named All-Tournament selections.

"I couldn't be prouder of what we accomplished here," said head coach Jon Moseley. "This is such a strong group of girls that never gave up. After beating teams like Berry and Lee, we feel like we can play with anybody. We played with great passion this weekend, and we'll need to continue to do that next week."

The team will now advance to the Region XIII tournament next weekend.
