Sept. 12, 2009

Mt. Berry, Ga. - Sophomore Justyna Mudy captured first place overall to lead the Shorter College women's cross country squad to a second place finish in the Berry College Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning.

Mudy, the defending Southern States Athletic Conference individual champion and 2008 SSAC Runner of the Year, won the 5k event in a time of 18:31.26, over half a minute faster than second place finisher Courtney Cooper from Berry (19:19.98)

The meet featured 172 runners from 20 teams, and the Lady Hawks ran well to establish themselves as one of the event's top units.

Paulina Sarat placed 14th with a time of 20:13.64, Kaitlin Shaw landed in 16th at 20:15.31 and Sarah Massey finished in 20th-place after posting a time of 20:36.64, giving Shorter four top-20 finishers.

Julie Frayre rounded out the Lady Hawks' top-five with a time of 20:45.44, good enough for 25th-place overall and helping Shorter finish with 76 points, 13 ahead of third place Lee University (89).

Columbus State and the University of West Georgia made up the remainder of the top-five with team scores of 121 and 150, respectively.

Berry took the team championship with a score of 56, riding a trio of individual top-ten finishes to the title.

The Lady Hawks return to the course on Oct. 3 when they head to Louisville, Ky. for the Louisville Classic. Race time is set for 10 a.m.
